Mazda continually works toward creating cutting-edge car model designs. Equally important and somewhat unheralded is some innovative work on environmentally friendly fuel options. A recent initiative highlights the automaker’s commitment to carbon neutrality, greener manufacturing, and a more environmentally conscious way of driving.

Next-Generation Biodiesel Fuel

An ongoing initiative by the Japanese automaker is creating eco-friendly fuel options. The latest fuel option is a 100% biodiesel fuel made using recycled cooking oil and microalgae fats. This next-generation biodiesel was tested in the final round of the 2021 Super Taikyu race series with the Skyactiv®-D 1.5 engine in the ST-Q class, a non-championship category created to showcase experimental vehicles and innovative vehicle technology.

Because this new biodiesel is made with sustainably sourced raw materials, it won’t compete with the human food supply and doesn’t rely on environmentally harmful extraction methods. This helps push biodiesel fuels into a prominent role as a new environmentally friendly fuel source.

A Commitment to Achieving Carbon Neutrality

Mazda is dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality with the entire supply chain of its vehicles by 2050. They are working toward this goal with their approach offering a multi-solution approach, providing a variety of powertrain options to their customers, including:

  • Conventional hybrid models
  • Diesel engine models
  • EV models
  • Plug-in hybrid models

To achieve their end goal, they will also promote the next-generation biodiesel fuel, as this new innovative diesel fuel can fuel existing vehicles and other equipment without modification.
