Brown and Wood Mazda knows that safety is a top priority for drivers, especially those with kids. While we’re justifiably proud of our vehicles’ advanced safety features, one of the simplest is one of the most important. It’s called the LATCH system, and since it’s vital in keeping smaller children safe, we’re taking a moment to explain how to use it correctly.
What is the LATCH System?
LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. This safety system was developed to simplify child seat installation and improve kids’ safety. The tethers and anchors in question are generally located between the bottom and back of the second-row seats, with the top tether typically found on the back of the seat, in the cargo area, or on the rear deck. Consult your owner’s manual to locate the LATCH hardware since each model deploys it a bit differently.
Installing the Car Seat
Your first priority is selecting a car seat appropriate to your child’s height, age, and weight, ensuring it’s LATCH compatible. Installation is designed for simplicity, and once the seat is installed, it will keep your child safer. Follow these steps to install the child restraint with the LATCH anchors system:
- Move the seat belt buckle away from the lower anchors.
- Ensure that no objects on the seats will prevent a secure connection
- Place the child restraint on the vehicle seat following the instructions on the car seat
- Finally, properly adjust and tighten the lower attachments on the child restraint to the lower anchors
